Electricity Generation

Continuous emissions monitoring system. Power plants.

Continuous emissions monitoring system. Power plants. In this type of installation, when fossil fuels are used, emissions are generated that present certain pollutants. By environmental regulations these emissions are controlled and for this purpose a continuous emissions monitoring system is installed. This system makes it possible to record emissions.
In general, systems are installed in the plants for the removal of regulated pollutants such as COx, NOx, SOx. The CEMS allows evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of these systems.
The CEMS can be in situ or extractive measurement. The extractive can be dry, wet or diluted. All four have the advantage that they are based on proven technologies, but they present certain differences that will have greater or lesser impact depending on the installation and its location.
Basically, it consists of taking a sample of the exhaust gases, usually in the chimney, which is analyzed according to the technology used.

The on-site technology is characterized by wet measurement, real-time analysis, and no sample line. Among the disadvantages of poor accessibility, it is affected by particles or droplets, and is limited to measurements at low concentration.
The dry extractive has the disadvantage that it does not measure humidity, presents the possibility of acid condensation in applications with high concentrations of sulfur, also presents high maintenance, etc.
For the wet version, it has the advantage that it makes the measurement on a wet basis, and it is low maintenance, but it requires analyzer and sampling lines with heating, it presents moisture interference with NOx measurements, etc.
For the wet version, it has the advantage that it makes the measurement on a wet basis, and it is low maintenance, but it requires analyzer and sampling lines with heating, it presents moisture interference with NOx measurements, etc.
The dilution extractive allows wet-based measurement, requires low maintenance, does not require heated lines, etc; However, it requires correction for temperature and pressure changes, clean air for accurate measurements, and freeze protection.
The application of this technology for CEMS will depend on the process and plant conditions.
