Electricity Generation

Cooling water. Power plants.

Cooling water. Power plants. One of the most common systems for cooling the steam cycle in power plants is using a surface chiller with water as the cooling fluid.
In this type of equipment the cooling water can be direct flow, open or closed.
Direct flow systems are limited by the availability of the water source with capacity and stability for the system, the treatment to be applied, and the temperature increase allowed for the water on site. It has the advantages that a cooling tower or water treatment is not required.
In the case of the use of evaporative towers and closed systems, both are limited by air temperature. The advantage of closed ones is that they have no water loss and the treatment is minimal, with the disadvantage that they have a high power consumption.

Cooling water. Power plants.

In general, the CWS of the plants can present several variants, among them: direct flow, with mechanical draft tower, with dry / wet tower of mechanical draft, cooling water with natural draft tower, cooling water with dry tower, each design will have specific requirements and its selection must be made considering the effect on the overall performance of the plant.

Cooling towers.

The most widely used system is tower cooling. In this type of equipment, the current is cooled to temperatures close to ambient. This system requires control of water solids content, alkalinity, scale, corrosion, biological control, and foam and discoloration. Additionally, water contamination with liquids and/or gases should be minimized.
