Corrosion in natural gas: amine-sweetening units.

Corrosion in natural gas: amine-sweetening units. The corrosion in such systems is mainly caused by acidic components such as (CO2 and H2S) dissolved in the amine, amine degradation products, heat-stable amine salts, and other contaminants. This can be general or localized, and mainly attacks carbon steel parts.
Among the HSAS are the anions: acetate, format, oxalate, chloride, nitrate and nitrite, sulfide, sulphide, thiosulfate, thiocyanate, phosphate. These have a significant impact on corrosion when their concentration is greater than 2% m/m in the mixture.
Another factor to consider is the type of amine, since there is a difference in the order of aggressiveness between them, which influences the maximum value allowed for compounds that promote corrosion.
The most common methods to avoid this problem are a controlled operation and maintenance of the amine solution, and a proper selection of building materials and manufacturing processes.

Refinery gases.

In the case of refineries, corrosion by ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, oxygen and organic acids is also included, which requires a detailed study for the selection of materials.
Some construction materials that guarantee the useful life of the unit are: carbon steel, stainless steel, plated steel with stainless steel internal. Additionally, fully calmed carbon steel with resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking can be used. In any case, it seeks to optimize costs by guaranteeing the reliability of the system, and for this the plant is divided into sections in which each type of material can be used according to the concentration of the corrosion-sensitive compound in that section, being able to include sections with the same material at different thicknesses or combinations of these.

Corrosion in natural gas: amine-sweetening units.

This is one of the main problems in this type of system, so an adequate study of the composition of the gas can guarantee the selection of suitable material to have an operation under specifications, extending the useful life of the plant.
