Environmental Management System

Environmental Management System (EMS). This is a system developed in organizations with the purpose that they consider environmental impacts in all aspects of their daily activities. One of the most accepted international standards to establish the elements and requirements that an EMS must have is the standard ISO-14001 Environmental Management Systems, which provides order and consistency to conduct environmental matters.
The EMS should be part of the overall management of the company, and includes all the structure, planning, activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes, and resources that an organization must provide to implement, achieve, review, and maintain the environmental policy.

Environmental Management System: Principles.

The five principles on which an EMS is based are: environmental policy, environmental management planning, implementation and operation, check and corrective action, and management review.
In the environmental policy the company establishes the guideline and intention of the management towards: the prevention of pollution and support for the principles of: sustainable development, biodiversity, eco-efficiency, industrial ecology and environmental protection.
The planning of environmental management is aimed at creating the bases that allow the faithful fulfillment of the environmental policy elaborated. According to ISO-14001 this must consider: environmental aspects, both their identification and the inclusion of them in business objectives; legal requirements, mainly the identification and access to legal requirements to comply with actions; objectives and targets, their establishment; and environmental programs, their establishment, accountability, programming, and activities.
Considering the implementation and operation, it is the principle that guarantees, allocates and manages the essential resources for the implementation and control of the system, including: responsibility centers, detection of training needs, the fluidity of communication, documentation and its control, monitoring of operations and emergency preparedness.
Check and corrective action is the principle in charge of evaluating the effectiveness of the EMS in solving problems, and for this, it includes: procedures to monitor and measure on a regular basis the key characteristics of its processes and activities that can have a significant impact on the environment.
Finally, management review is the principle that states that management should review the EMS frequently according to their needs, in order to ensure its continuous adaptation, adequacy and effectiveness.
