Environment

ESG-Environmental criteria: their development.

ESG-environmental criteria: their development.
Step 1: Management.

ESG criteria are a challenge that companies must currently face to respond to some of the demands of the market. The challenge is marked by a change in the way things are done, a change in the way work is done.
Currently, companies have as a basis for their organizational structure and development of their activities the criteria: cost, productivity, quality, safety, and competitiveness, that is, the entire organization moves maintaining the balance between these parts, framed in that pentagon. Due to the demands of ESG criteria, now that pentagon must be transformed into a hexagon where the new edge is the Environment, but not only seen from the outside but as part of the organization.

Environment.

In the last century the issue of environment in companies was usually treated as something punctual, and isolated from the vital activities of these. In general, measures were applied mainly to correct actions after the environmental impact was generated. At the end of the last century and the beginning of this one, measures were established to try to mitigate this impact before it is generated and with this comply with increasingly strict environmental regulations.
At present, with ESG criteria in place, this situation has changed, not only does it seek to comply with environmental regulations, but the objective of “zero” emissions must be sought, that is, any type of impact must be avoided or minimized as much as possible.

Zero emissions.

Achieving the goal of zero emissions is a challenge for companies since the way of working changes the idea is not about burdening staff with new functions, but to introduce a new criterion when evaluating their routine activities. This requires the implementation of strategies.
As a starting point, Consultora Caribe recommends applying two strategies to achieve this objective: one general and one specific.
As a general strategy it is recommended to apply a deep environmental education, where each member of the organization can include the environmental parameter in the development of their activities, that is, all employees must contribute their grain of sand from their position to reduce the impact. This environmental education strategy should have several levels, according to the functions performed by each position.
As for the specific strategy, the company, according to its activities, must have expert personnel in the environmental chemical area to supervise its activities; Depending on the magnitude and risk of the activities it can be internal or external personnel. In general, low-risk activities can be handled with internal personnel, but when the risk of the activity increases, the company must hire specialized personnel for the development of the work, and for economic reasons it usually tends to be external personnel.
