Relief gases in refineries: recovery system. Relief systems are of vital importance in oil refining plants, as they guarantee the safe disposal of gases that cannot be handled at some point in the process and can cause overpressure in the equipment.
The relief system is usually made up of relief valves, collection heads, liquid separation and water seal drums, and as a final element the flare or tea.
The method used in this system is the controlled burning of gases in the flare, but this system has an environmental impact. One of the operating characteristics of this system is that most of the time it works well below its design capacity, except in emergency situations.
The rest of the time, the system operates with a gas that ensures that the flame of the flare is lit all the time. There are cases of refineries in which they have been able to determine that there is a constant flow of relief, although of variable composition, that is, the flare is fed with an apparently constant flow, in mass flow, but variable in composition, since the reliefs come from different plants, with variable compositions.
