Waste Management.

Waste Managementent is a set of operations carried out to achieve the management of waste obtained in production processes in a safe manner and in accordance with current regulations. This covers the storage, collection, transport, recycling, reuse, and disposal of waste.
Among the phases of waste management are: analysis of waste generating processes, environmental audits, waste minimization (source reduction, reuse, and recycling), and disposal and final management (disposal).
When talking about waste management, several premises are established that serve as a starting point for the actions to be followed to achieve the objectives. These premises are detailed below.

WM: Reduce.

The first element is the reduction of the volume and/or toxicity of the waste generated, based on the use of more efficient and operationally feasible technologies. As an example of this is the reduction in the consumption of water for cooling in an industrial plant by changing the cooling system, moving from cooling towers with the use of water to the use of air.
WM: Reuse.
The next element to consider is the reuse of the waste in its original form or with only a pre-treatment, after minimization at the source or reduction of its hazardousness if possible.
WM: Recover.
This contemplates the recovery of material or energy from waste for other uses. An example of this is the recovery of precious metals from spent catalysts, and the recovery of heat at the exit of steam and/or gas turbines.
WM: Recycle.
Finally, the recycling of the materials obtained by transforming them into usable materials with the application of treatments is considered. Examples of this are the recycling of plastic, paper, cardboard, etc.
Conclusion
The main idea of waste management is to bring the waste to its minimum expression in quantity and hazardousness, introducing changes in the process. In this order of ideas, different changes can be proposed, a technical evaluation of them can be made, and finally an economic evaluation, based on the cost-benefit ratio of the change.
